zooophagous:

Probably because of the false distinction between a “pet” animal, and god forbid they ever die for any reason, and a “food” animal where we don’t even care if it lives in squalor before dying very young.

If you ask me, the eating of horses and dogs and cats for that matter is something people freak out about too fucking much. If you want to stop people from eating horses, breed fewer horses so they don’t end up in kill auctions.

Irresponsible, over breeding is the cause of so many problems with domesticated animals :/

I really do think we should breed horses for meat. “Wahh it’s a pet” should not fucking apply if it was bred and raised purely for meat. Let’s start doing this, people. Horses are overbred enough as-is.

Eating un-homed animals of any kind seems to be a better option than just killing them and throwing them away. I’m sick of people whining all “waaahhh don’t kill dogs for food.” I’d eat dog. I’D EAT YOUR WHOLE FAMILY.

Aren’t rabbits pets

And also meat

So I don’t see the problem?

Obviously I’m not gonna eat MY OWN cats but if cat was bred and served as meat I’d eat that.

Why am I not eating horse. Is horse a thing that can be bought at the grocery store?

I’m grocery shopping today, and I will literally buy some horse meat if it is a thing I can buy.

I don’t think its a defensible position to say ‘I won’t eat it if its a commonly kept pet’, and if there weren’t a number of serious problems with eating horse meat, despite the fact I have horses I’d be a-okay with that.

The problem is two-fold: the slaughter plants used to process horses are not built for horses, they are built for cattle. Cattle are much different animals in terms of behavior, and the percentage of botched kills for horses is unacceptable in terms of suffering for me.Anyone who’s ever tried to touch the head of a panicking horse will know how tough it is. Now imagine trying to line a captive bolt up with its skull to ensure it goes through the brain.

Number two, horses are not legally considered food animals by the government. What does that mean? It means while old Buster might taste great, he is full of not-approved-for-consumption drugs. Vaccines and bute being the most popular, both of which can have seriously harmful effects on people. Because the vast majority of their meat is shipped overseas, the government apparently doesn’t see this as a problem (despite the fact there have been deaths attributed to the ingestion of chemicals through horse meat).

This weekend, we returned to the Tick House and discovered Tick House Jr. This time, I was brave/foolish enough to find a way upstairs to investigate further. The stairs were easily accessible from the side of the house but I had to shimmy my way past a heavy pile of plywood that partially covered the last few steps and the landing to the second floor.

#1: A view up into the Tick House. The rain is my favorite part about this one.

#2: A nice shot of the chimney (? maybe just a pillar) in the center of the house.

#3: A view of Tick House Jr. from the second story window of the Tick House.

#4: The attic stairs, as seen from the second floor.

#5: The window on the second story landing.

#6: A mattress in one of the second story bedrooms. This could be seen from the first floor.

#7: Looking from the hallway into one of the other second story bedrooms.

#8: A bedroom (left) and bathroom (through the burned door). This photo shows the extent of the fire damage to the second story.

#9: Looking to the end of the hallway. I eventually made my way up the second staircase to the opposite end of the hall and wanted to go across the rug (it was surprisingly stable) to access the attic stairs, but my husband told me not to push my luck, as I’d already fallen into a hole in Tick House Jr. that day. Judging from the state of the roof, there wasn’t much of an attic left, anyway.

#10: The hallway, as seen from the other side. Note the moss-covered pants hanging down from the attic.

The following shots are other favorites that wouldn’t fit in the main photo section because of Tumblr’s limit of ten uploads.

This shoe was wedged in a gap between the second floor and the staircase. For some reason, it made me feel sad.

This house is a great reminder that nature eventually reclaims everything. I saw some rain-drenched moss hanging from the remnants of the ceiling on the second floor.

This is the main room on the second floor, presumably a master bedroom. It was also the only room that had a closet. The floor was littered with clothing and shoes.

Another crumbling bedroom.

I leaned out the window of the middle bedroom on the second floor to snap this photo; just a box fan chilling on the roof covering the porch.

A view of the exterior of the house, taken from the same window.

We stole one last look at the master bedroom before getting back in the car and saying goodbye to the Tick House. My husband observed that given the springiness in the boards and the overall increase in decay from my visit over the summer, the house probably wouldn’t last another winter. (Note: He didn’t accompany us on our first visit, though he did look at the photos my friend and I snapped.)

It makes me sad to think that this house has sat abandoned for so long, and I wonder what stories it could tell. My friend found a 1994 (archived) image of the house from Google Earth/Maps (one of the two; I can’t remember which) that showed the house in a similar state of disrepair/decay, so presumably the fire happened long before then. We’ll have to do more digging to uncover its history, because after visiting twice, I don’t think we’ll be able to leave it alone.
